Paver patios and walkways in St. George
A paver patio is only as good as what’s under it. I dig to depth, compact the base in lifts, screed the bedding sand flat, lay the field, lock the edges and sweep sand into the joints. Then the compactor goes over it one more time, so it stays flat through the summer heat and the monsoon.

01 Scope
What’s included.
Every line below is on the written quote, itemized, so you can see what you’re paying for and what you’re not.
- Layout marked out with you on site, grades and drainage checked
- Excavation and haul-off of what comes out
- Road base compacted in lifts, never one thick pour
- Bedding sand screeded flat
- Pavers laid, cut and fitted to the pattern you picked
- Edge restraint on every open edge
- Polymeric sand swept in and set, then a final pass with the compactor
02 How I build it
The order matters more than the material.
Most of the work is under the surface. These are the steps, in the order they happen on your job.
- Lay it out and dig to depth. The patio is drawn on the ground with you before anything is dug. Then I excavate for the full base, not just the paver, and get the water running away from the house.
- Compact the base in lifts.Road base goes in a few inches at a time and gets compacted each time. One thick lift never compacts all the way down, and that is where dips come from.
- Screed the sand and lay the field.A thin, even bed of sand, screeded flat off pipes. Pavers go down on it in the pattern, cuts are made at the edges, and nothing gets walked on until the edge is set.
- Edge, sand and compact.Edge restraint pins the field so it cannot spread. Polymeric sand goes into the joints, gets wetted to set, and the compactor seats every paver into the bed.
Depths, heights and what the city requires vary with the lot. The numbers for your yard are written into the quote, not guessed from a web page.
03 Money
What changes the price.
No price list, because no two yards are the same. These are the things that move the number, so the quote makes sense when you read it.
Size and shape
Square footage sets most of the price. Curves and tight spaces mean more cuts and more time than a simple rectangle of the same size.
Patio or driveway
A driveway carries a car, so it needs a deeper base and often a thicker paver than a patio. The depth for your job is written into the quote.
The paver itself
Concrete pavers, travertine and natural stone sit in very different price ranges. I will show you what each looks like and what it costs before you choose.
What is there now
Old concrete to break out and haul, caliche under the dirt, or a yard the loader cannot reach all add labor. I look for all three at the visit.

The rest of the yard.
Most jobs are two or three of these together. Each one starts with what goes under it.
